El Pelón Taqueria

Neighborhood taco spot rises from the ashes in a new location

The true test of a man's character has always been measured by how he handles adversity, like Will Smith overcoming homelessness to become a stockbroker or Will Smith overcoming logic to become a Scientologist. Conquering adversity with a fresh location, El Pelón Taqueria, opening Tuesday.

After not one, but two fires eventually destroyed their Peterborough St resto last year, the resilient owner of this Fenway taco joint has traded BU for BC and re-opened serving a similar menu of regional Mexican fare in a new brick-red/white 12-seat Comm Ave space outfitted with imported Day of the Dead regalia, old pictures and a decorative wooden tortilla press that they rescued from the rubble -- because everyone knows Barney doesn't take care of his stuff. Specialty tacos include the salsa fresca'd grilled chicken and melted Jack Americanos; a Rajas con Queso stuffed w/ black beans and roasted poblano chiles; the cornmeal & spice-encrusted Icelandic cod Pescado covered w/ cucumbers, chile mayo, and pickled cabbage; and the Caramelos, a hot sauce-doused steak taco w/ guac that'll stretch you out-out-out of your Bugle Boys. There's also South-of-the-Border tastiness like a grilled chicken, Mexican rice & black bean plate w/ salad and corn tortillas; Carnitas tortas (braised pork, refried beans, and limed onions piled on a toasted roll with guac and spicy mayo); and the 12-inch Jack cheese-smothered El Guapo steak burrito topped with fire roasted salsa, sour cream, and a plethora of pinatas.

For light noshing, EPT also grills up smaller treats like shredded beef/corn tortilla taquitos, pork/refried bean-layered tostados, and lightly fried golden brown plantains with a salsa that's also fire roasted, although, to avoid dealing with more adversity, El Pelón might want to re-think that.
