Canvas

441 N Fairfax Ave, Mid Wilshire; 323.944.0678

Tattoo art is full of bold, arresting designs you'd be proud to rock, if only they didn't have to be inked into your cringing flesh like some sort of tattoo. Get the glory without the guts at Canvas.

Thrillist - CanvasPart clothing shop, part art gallery, Canvas' current collection showcases the non-skin-based work of nearly 60 needle artists, from old Japanese masters to the guy who gave Brian Setzer his first Stray Cat tattoo (but not his last one, "I Heart Xmas Residuals"). Gear highlights include a black-and-white tee with a meticulously detailed, line-drawn phoenix, an Asian-tiger-bedecked hoodie, and colorfully skulled-up Vans, a stylish reminder that, despite the shoes' origins, you should not step on that skateboard. Meanwhile, the paintings include an Alice-In-Wonderlandish fantasy-scape complete with walking hammers, and portraits of an angelic Morrissey and a lifelike Karl Jung, minus the full-color shoulderblade "Mom" that got him so much grief from Freud.

Behind the gallery's hidden a dark, red-tinged, booze-and-beer barroom, making Canvas the only tattoo place you can stumble around drunk in, without fear of waking up later with a bold, arresting "Berserker" tramp-stamp scrawled across the top of your ass.
