Villa Vino

When guys follow the paths of their fathers, there are often dazzling results: Julio Igelsias paved the way for Enrique's rise to sensuous crooner, while Bill Walton couldn't be prouder of Luke's sensuous coif. For a son stepping into Pop's restaurateur shoes, check out just-opened Villa Vino.

Occupying one half of the recently bisected Genki Noodles & Sushi, Villa's an Italian pizza, pasta, & panini nook from the son of the proprietor of nearby Rio Grande Cantina, who trained 10 years under pops before stepping out on his own; his inaugural joint features mustard yellow and dark wood walls upstairs, a darkened downstairs bar/lounge hangout for DJ'd dancing, and a platformed, umbrella-covered front patio, for staying away from people who dance at restaurants. Grub starts with tapas like tomato-covered, focaccia'd Eggplant Caponate and primi like Baked Brie w/ Pesto, plus other light fare like balsamic-vin-glazed, tzatziki-topped Italian kebabs w/ grilled chicken, steak, pork, shrimp, or scallops called Spedinis, and cheese/olive/meat wine plates, sized to go with a bottle or a glass -- although if you're just getting one helping, you're not man enough for such a large harem of meat. Paninis like the Mambo Italiano (grilled chicken, cupacola ham, pesto mayo) come with pasta salad or fresh-made chips; for fuller feasting, there's house-made lasagna, entrees like Tuna Puntenesca (ahi-grade & peppercorned over whipped polenta), or pizzas, which get 28 DIY toppings and specialty options like the four-sectioned "Quattro", which features 1) marinated olives & sundried tomato, 2) shrooms, onions, pancetta, 3) fried peppers & basil, and 4) ham, ricotta, & oregano, and handles like a dream in the dough.

Villa's got 23 bottled beers, including Edison, Moretti La Rossa, and Fat Tire, plus 80 vinos like CakeBread cab, Chateau Julia Chard, and Francis Coppola, who paved the way for his daughter to follow in his footsteps of being terrible in Godfather III.
