Thrillist AustinThere are many reasons you'd want to take a date for late-night grub instead of asking her back to your place. For one that has nothing to do with penis-withering cowardice, check out 24 Diner, just opened and serving 24/7.
24-D is headed up by two chefs trained at New York's Culinary Institute of America (one was valedictorian), who've spent the last year revamping a former Waterloo Ice House into a sleekly modern diner with high ceilings, an open kitchen, polished concrete floors, Eames Eiffel Tower bar stools, and red/black vinyl booth seating embellished by dramatic track lighting to keep you looking your most attractive even when you're at your least. The menu's a cut above standard woozy-hour fare, starting with apps like Sparkies (buttermilk dressing'd pickled jalapenos stuffed w/ cheddar, sausage, cornmeal), Deviled Eggs (bacon, smoked paprika, chives), and Risotto Cake (Parmesan, sweet/sour pepper relish), as well as breakfast options from Steak and Eggs to Chicken & Waffles, but never Chicken & Eggs, because hey, who's to say it's not Eggs & Chicken. Heartier stuff includes four burgers ground from Texas brisket (Bacon Gorgonzola, Mushroom, Cheddar, Patty Melt), sandwiches on baguette or sourdough like the Pulled Chicken Breast (w/ goat cheese, avocado, roasted tomato) and Pork Belly (cucumber, carrot, cilantro, mint, serrano chili, pickled red onion, aioli), and traditional entrees like pot pies and sweet-onion gravy meat loaf, for those who would eat anything for love, and will do fat.
Stumble in before 2am and select from 40 wines curated by the GM (a Level II Sommelier), or microbrews like Brooklyn Brewery Local 1 and Stone Arrogant Bastard -- if you're one too, you're probably at home right now, thinking that you're awesome in bed.
