Athletically inspired gear is great for assuring people you engage in athletically inspired activities, but there are occasions when "deep thigh contusion!" isn't the message you're hoping to send. Now handling both needs, Canterbury of New Zealand.
Established in 1904, the self-proclaimed "global rugby brand” has just dropped dueling spring lines: a selection of classic rugby shirts and replica team jerseys, and a dressier “Off-Field Collection” bearing only the slightest marks of the “ruffian's game played by gentlemen”. The latter runs the gamut from buttondowns like the b&w-striped “Julian” (tiny NZ flag on right bottom, red & white striped cuff linings), 100% fine-gauge cotton “Kiwi” V-neck sweaters, and French terry zip-up sweatshirts and hoodies -- one with horizontal stripes and a back-appliquéd “15”, the number of players per side in rugby (so it's like vicious tee-ball). On the classic rugger tip, there's the horizontal-striped “Fly Half” (w/ reinforced black contrast shoulder & arm stitching) and “Player” (w/ Jerry West-style silhouette); even sportier are 100% poly pique mesh replica jerseys for everyone from the Irish National team to the London Wasps (who recently trounced the New Delhi Hindu People).
Canterbury's also partnered with Guinness on gear emblazoned with the stout's iconic artwork. All the new stuff'll be showcased during a party at Riley, 12-4pm Saturday afternoon; there'll be free beer (For Strength), plus w/purchase gifts from bottle openers to rugby balls -- which if used in tandem will leave you dazed and contused.
