DevOps
- Take personal responsibility for the availability and reliability of our service.
- Save the company a lot of money on infrastructure costs.
- Author tools that reliably manage infrastructure. We're looking for someone to write clean, re-usable code. Elegant code that’s simple. This *is not* a scripting/sysadmin job.
- Write maintainable code with extensive test coverage, working in a professional software engineering environment (with source control, dev/stage/prod release cycle, continuous deployment) - cowboy coders need not apply.
- Much of our existing system is built in Ruby, but you’re free to select other platforms, languages, open source components for different pieces of the project.
- Support our existing production cluster management system while you improve it. Our current system is hacked together in PHP, Ruby and a bunch other stuff.
- Own our server image configurations, collaborating with core server engineers to optimize for task performance, reliability, failover and scale.
- You know exactly how awesome it would be to create what's described above. You've been dreaming about the opportunity to work on something like this without the distraction of other stuff for years. This job description made you drool a little.
- A distributed systems foundation and a service-oriented mindset. You’re always thinking
- “What happens if this fails?” when you build things.
- You've "carried the pager" before (ideally at both a startup and a large infrastructure provider) & have first-hand experience with what happens when infrastructure / tools fail.
- A minimum of 5 years of coding experience (school counts). Much more experience would be great. What matters is that you’ve shipped and maintained mission-critical tools and infrastructure that many other people depend on.
- You are a prolific coder who works well independently.
- You’ve written software tools to manage servers.
- You are conversant in the pros and cons of different clouds: EC2, slicehost, rackspace, etc.
- You've poked around with other projects trying to do similar things (rightscale, cloudcake, opscode).
- You’ve made a substantial contribution to a widely used open source project. Huge bonus points if you started or lead a project.
- You read up on and experiment with new technologies because it’s in your nature, not because it’s a job requirement.
- You don’t just learn how things work, you learn why.
- Formal training in computer science (bachelors, masters, whatever)

Front End Developer
Thrillist, and JackThreads, and our newest family member, ThrillistRewards are scaling rapidly and building a team of hardcore programmers to match our lofty ambitions. Each weekday, we drop our subscribers a must-have recommendation, from the best of what's new,to deeply under-the-radar goodness. We don't waste our readers' time with things that suck. So we don't write reviews, just recommendations, and because we painstakingly wade through the crap to unearth greatness, you get exclusively the best of your city's food, drinks, gear, services, entertainment, travel options, and events, like booze cruises, and a divine concept surely birthed on a boozecruise -- stripper cruises.
We're looking for front end developers, of all experience levels, who will take our awesome design teams' comps and make them sing. Our developers are fastidious about code quality, but know when to be pragmatic and just get stuff done. They should love to work hard, because they know how great it feels to say, "Yeah, I built that."
Think you have what it takes? This is what we're looking for:
- A strong understanding of JavaScript or jQuery. If you know another library, that's cool... you'll just need to prove it.
- Expert understanding of CSS and HTML. You know how to build towards cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility. (Except forIE6. We're not cruel, after all.)
- A passion for front-end development. We want you to own the front-end domain, and that takes passion.
This would make you a better candidate:
- Know how to code emails that work in the lowliest of email clients (yes, we're talking Outlook.)
- Know how to use Git and GitHub (or SVN.)
- Experience with Selenium or other testing products.
This would make you the best candidate:
- Experience working with Drupal themes.
We expect a ton out of our team, and because of that, we want to make sure you’re as happy as can be. We have a conference and book budget for continuing your education, team lunches, dual monitors and brand new iMacs (want a PC? Let us know and we can make it happen.) We make sure to keep our coffee machines brewing all day and have situated Nerf weaponry around our offices for the impromptu dart war (did we mention the Nerf budget?). Don’t forget the normal benefits, too: competitive salary, health insurance, sick days, vacation days and as you spend more time with our team, flexible work hours and work place. Naturally working at Thrillist means you get access to some pretty cool Thrillist events and occasional product (booze) presentations right in our office.
Candidates MUST be available to work from our offices in Soho, NYC.
No offshore or remote (sorry).
Please send resume and cover blurb to techjobs@thrillist.com

Web Applications Developer
Thrillist, and JackThreads, and our newest family member, Thrillist Rewards are scaling rapidly and building a team of hardcore programmers to match our lofty ambitions. We’re looking for programmers of all levels, preferably with experience using PHP and MySQL. If you’re comfortable with jQuery, that is even better. Our systems’ “cores” are Drupal 6 and CakePHP, so experience with those is a definite plus. Other technologies we work with are MongoDB, Solr, PostgreSQL and Amazon Web Services. If you have Sys Admin chops, we definitely want to hear about it.
On a daily basis you could be working on projects big and small – handling upgrades to a massive email campaign and send reputation system or working on our mobile API (because after all, we also have to support the backend for our iPhone, iPad and Android apps.) This position requires both design and implementation work. We’ve got a bunch of cool applications in development, some large, some small.
If you’re interested and ready to start down a path sure to end in fame and likely debauchery, send an email to techjobs@thrillist.com
