Thrillist runs on a mix of hardware and cloud servers. We use multiple environments based on price, performance, availability, failover & bandwidth of different offerings. We've deployed Puppet for automation of new servers (and updates to their core configuration) and an internal tool (built in Ruby) that helps developers work in similar environments as production. We use Munin and Nagios for monitoring and studying our systems. We need you to take this system to the next level, making it easy to manage and evolve our environments to meet our growing needs. You'll build scaling and healing automation that factors in security, failover, and quality/analytic tools to track stuff like packet loss, performance, latency, and more. In this position you'll own the forward-looking running and scaling of our mission-critical internal- and external-facing systems. This includes everything from load-balanced web clusters to internal file sharing and a cost-effective development and staging server strategy.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Take personal responsibility for the availability and reliability of our service. 
  • Save the company a lot of money on infrastructure costs.
  • Author tools that reliably manage infrastructure. We're looking for someone to write clean, re-usable code. Elegant code that’s simple. This *is not* a scripting/sysadmin job.
  • Write maintainable code with extensive test coverage, working in a professional software engineering environment (with source control, dev/stage/prod release cycle, continuous deployment) - cowboy coders need not apply.
  • Much of our existing system is built in Ruby, but you’re free to select other platforms, languages, open source components for different pieces of the project.
  • Support our existing production cluster management system while you improve it. Our current system is hacked together in PHP, Ruby and a bunch other stuff.
  • Own our server image configurations, collaborating with core server engineers to optimize for task performance, reliability, failover and scale.
 
Requirements:
  • You know exactly how awesome it would be to create what's described above. You've been dreaming about the opportunity to work on something like this without the distraction of other stuff for years. This job description made you drool a little.
  • A distributed systems foundation and a service-oriented mindset. You’re always thinking
  • “What happens if this fails?” when you build things.
  • You've "carried the pager" before (ideally at both a startup and a large infrastructure provider) & have first-hand experience with what happens when infrastructure / tools fail.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Prepare, analyze and report weekly, monthly, quarterly gross margin analysis by brand by customer type
  • Assist in month-end closing, prepare journal entries as necessary, analyze inventory evaluation, inventory roll forward

  • Coordinate with IT department for system issues, maintenance and development such as production, purchasing, import/export, accounts payable, accounts receivable, import/export IT, receiving, shipping, and others

Responsibilities

  • Assist in monthly and quarterly close procedures including the preparation of journal entries and workpaper packages supporting the reconciliation of general ledger accounts;
  • Assists in performing statistical analyses to determine trends, estimates, and significant changes;

The Shipping Performance Manager will identify opportunities, examine data, and execute programs to improve the efficiency of JackThread’s fulfillment and shipping network.  

In this position you will be responsible for creating an all-inclusive framework to understand how shipping influences the customer experience, developing uniform metrics and scorecards to track inefficiencies and implementing programs which enhance the customer experience while controlling costs. 

You will be also be responsible for designing a vendor program to ensure compliance with JackThreads’ shipping/transportation framework, measuring the vendors’ compliance to the framework and providing reporting on this compliance to key operational and financial stakeholders. 

This requires the ability to build the internal and external strategic relationships which will enable the fulfillment team to deliver relevant outcomes quickly. You will work in tandem with technology teams and business groups to analyze and share key data points.  An ideal candidate thrives on finding and solving problems and excels in consolidating and analyzing data across multiple systems.

Responsibilities:

Interface closely with finance to:

  • Identify, confirm and analyze quantitative data.
  • Design and maintain reports based on collected data.

Web Applications Developer

Thrillist, and JackThreads, and our newest family member, Thrillist Rewards are scaling rapidly and building a team of hardcore programmers to match our lofty ambitions. We’re looking for programmers of all levels, preferably with experience using PHP and MySQL. If you’re comfortable with jQuery, that is even better. Our systems’ “cores” are Drupal 6 and CakePHP, so experience with those is a definite plus. Other technologies we work with are MongoDB, Solr, PostgreSQL and Amazon Web Services. If you have Sys Admin chops, we definitely want to hear about it.

On a daily basis you could be working on projects big and small – handling upgrades to a massive email campaign and send reputation system or working on our mobile API (because after all, we also have to support the backend for our iPhone, iPad and Android apps.) This position requires both design and implementation work. We’ve got a bunch of cool applications in development, some large, some small.
