The 15 Best Bars With Fireplaces in NYC

Because it's butt-ass cold outside, but that list of infinity fireplace-equipped bars in NYC feels a little too daunting right now, we decided it was time to assemble this: a list of the 15 best FDR-approved drinkeries in the city, which we're pretty sure (pretty very sure?) is fewer than infinity.

Shoolbred's
Shoolbred’s

East Village
This editor favorite has one of the best hot toddies in town, amazing free chips, and when the temperature gets below 50, the fireplace is always ablaze. Secure a spot near it early (you’ll have to) and rake in the two-for-one happy hour special.

Harlem Public
Harlem Public

Harlem
Settle in near this Uptown spot’s cast iron stove top gas warmer and order some of the excellent (and possibly created after several "special tobacco" sessions) bar fare, including a peanut butter bacon burger, Mac and Steez ("extra super fancy" pasta and four-cheese blend), and Twizzler-infused vodka lemonade.

Draught 55

Midtown East
If you can’t grab the (extra comfortable) couch by the fire, this wasn’t a wasted trip -- the glass-enclosed atrium is a great spot to score craft beer after craft beer from a waitstaff that actually knows what it's talking about/is nice about it.

Rose Bar at Gramercy Park Hotel
Rose Bar at Gramercy Park Hotel

Gramercy
Elegant, dimly lit, and adorned with work by Andy Warhol, The Rose Bar is a great spot for impressing a date. Pretend you’re Orson Welles or some other famous-ass old timer as you sip high-priced cocktails and lean on the ornate mantle. Reservations are recommended after 9pm.

Clinton Hill
Yeah, Hot Bird doesn’t have a fireplace -- it has an entire goddamn fire pit. The BBQ joint next door delivers, in case you needed any more incentive. Cash only.

Tuffet
Tuffet

Williamsburg
This spot offers a great selection of cheeses and cured meats, killer cocktails, and great beers on tap. Outside, there’s a big patio, featuring a gas fireplace -- don’t expect tons of heat, but the glow is beautiful. Plus they’ll rent you the cozy back room, free of charge.

Union Hall
Ben Rosenzweig

Park Slope
Indoor bocce, music, comedy, a library, the fact that you can order a basket full of bacon as a side dish, and two fireplaces: Union Hall kind of does everything you want to do in winter, and they do it right.

Midtown East
Like everyone else in New York, we’ve got a soft spot for a rooftop bar (like, really soft, wait... was that weird?), and this one -- with its fireplace, Poetry Garden, and quality cocktails -- makes a great elevated date spot.

The House

Gramercy Park
Set up in an old carriage house in Gramercy Park, this tiny, pristine restaurant has a wine bar that might be one of the best spots in the city to have a low-key, cozy night. They have a truly excellent wine selection, so you can sip glasses by the fire while listening to old jazz.

Black Mountain Wine House
Black Mountain Wine House

Gowanus
This unpretentious spot on Union St is all the things most wine bars want to be, should be, but rarely are: homey, comfortable, farmhouse-y in a Brooklyn barnhouse...y. It's a great place to try out some new wines and snack on a small, simple, and very reasonably priced menu that includes mac & cheese with wild mushrooms, Gruyere, and truffle oil, plus fondue on Tuesdays.

Long Island City
With live music four days a week, an outdoor fireplace, a solid Scotch selection, and a gigantic outdoor seating area, this is as good a place as any in the city to warm up and drink tons of drinks this winter.

The Rookery
The Rookery

Bushwick
Not one, but two fireplaces -- one indoor and one outdoor -- grace The Rookery. The outdoor one is technically a chimenea -- an enclosed, wood-burning outdoor fireplace that throws off tons of heat, making it ideal for all-weather drinking. Try a gentlemanly cocktail or two (like the absinthe-fueled Depth Charge), or stop by brunch for the banana-battered French toast.

Art Bar

West Village
Hop off the subway and head past the front of the bar to the back room -- that’s where you can spread out on a couch and sip on lychee mojitos (let’s agree things like this aren’t just for summer, okay?), drink some beers, and take down a chili cheese dog with curly fries.

Camp

Boerum Hill
For a theme bar, this place is oddly un-obnoxious, but then "summer camp" is a pretty solid theme. Get in front of the stone-set fireplace beneath a deer head and play some board games, make a friendship bracelet, and pretend you might get in trouble with the counselors for making out with a cutie behind the kayak. Plus, parties of 15 or more get free s’mores and drink specials.

Clover Club
Clover Club

Cobble Hill
If you want to drink the best liquid dessert of your life, a drink that makes you question all of the drink-ordering decisions you’ve ever made in your life, order the Blackberry Fool at one of the best cocktail spots in the country. And if you want a spot by the backroom fireplace, show up as soon as you can, since this place gets super packed, super early.
