Fuel Pizza

High-grade pies for your little motor

Proving "road trips" and "horror movies where teenagers ask for a shortcut" aren't the only great things that start at gas stations: Fuel Pizza, whose original location was inside a historic one in North Carolina, and now occupies a K Street duplex that looks like someone Windex-ed the hell out of a highway rest stop, what with its two floors of gleaming antique pumps, vintage signs, and old motor oil cans hanging from the ceiling.

Available whole or by the slice, house specialties include the Extreme Fuel with pepperoni, Italian sausage, and ground beef (though to ensure extremeness, the beef should really be crooked ground); the Whole Engine with mild Italian sausage, meatballs, and green peppers; and a roasted chicken/ spinach/ part-skim mozzarella/ multigrain crust creation they dubbed the "Pyramid" because it comprises "all of the major food groups". Should you want to come out of there with a more pyramid-like shape yourself, they've also got a 45-wing platter (nine styles like Inferno, Buff-a-que, and Hot Honey BBQ), a three-meat stromboli, and a toasted sandwich w/ roast beef, ham & turkey called "Diesel", so order this before it's devoured by every meathead on K Street.

They're working on a liquor license, but estimate it'll be a month before they're stocking a full lineup of bottled beers and wine, as attempts to shortcut the DC liquor board can quickly descend into a hellish nightmare.
