Hump This
118 E 6th St, Downtown; 213.622.9999
In the back of Cole's (behind an oak door marked only with a framed drawing of a cocktail), this tiny bar from the vaunted mixologist minds behind Manhattan's Milk & Honey and Little Branch is delivering cocktails handcrafted with the same attention to detail as its NY counterparts (chipped block ice, homemade ingredients, fresh-squeezed juice, etc). Decor's turn-of-the-century, with cushioned, slatted-wood booths and a penny-tile floor; drinks're similarly old-school, with classics like the Bees Knees, the Gin & It, and the Hemingway Daiquiri -- drink a couple and tell the tale of The Old Man and the Pee.
Their barely-there website's at TheVarnishBar.com8764 Melrose, West Hollywood; 310.432.2000
This London transplant's transformed the Morton's space into a massive, upscale Italian bistro (glass chandeliers, plush tufted leather banquettes) with subtle hints of 50's ice cream parlor (stationary purple barstools). Food ranges from creative breakfasts (wood-baked fritatta w/ pancetta/wild mushrooms & ricotta), to pasta lunches (crab ravioli w/ saffron sauce), to seafood dinners (charcoal-grilled Santa Barbara prawns w/ escarole & anchovy), as well as tableside-made tartares, carpaccios, and salads, including one with lobster, asparagus, and fava beans -- which also go great with a nice Chianti, and roving civil servants' livers.
All the menus are at CecconisWestHollywood.comOpen to the public Saturdays at 7080 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood; 323.960.3300
Finally open to the public after months of private events, this club's party zones mimic the interior of a swanky house, with a flatscreen- and couch-saturated living room/dance floor, leather-trimmed bedroom/VIP area, and kitchen/bar w/ a working stove, which makes chocolate-chip cookies every night for good drunks who finish their broccoli-coladas.
