The List
Hump This
Monday 9pm-close at 714 W. Olympic Blvd, Downtown
Thanks to an intrepid barman who realized he could drum up more business on Mondays if he took the night over himself, this dark, intimately patio'd, usually members-only Downtown cocktail room's opening their doors exclusively to Thrillist readers, with free Le Tourment Vert absinthe from 9 to 11 and electro/rock tunes provided all night by the girl-DJ duo Pony vs Tiger, which doesn't sound like a fair fight at all, even though Woods has a nine-iron.
The first 50 rsvps to steve.livigni@gmail.com get in for sure to this week's event; if you don't make it, you'll still get invites to future eventsAt the Terranea: 6610 Palos Verdes Drive South, Palos Verdes; 310.265.2800
This surfy gastropub sits directly over Ranchos Palos Verdes' jaw-dropping ocean coves, and sports an amped-up beach fare menu including chipotle shrimp tacos w/ napa slaw, avocado, & red chili "mojo" sauce, and a lobster roll on thick brioche, as well as pitchers of micro-suds like Dale's Pale Ale and Fat Tire. The patio gets an outdoor fireplace, while the woody interior's made entirely of recycled and sustainable materials (including a bartop made of wine bottles), and is decorated with posters from late-50s TV show Sea Hunt, starring Lloyd Bridges -- who, when he said yes to Honey I Blew Up The Kid, chose the wrong day to quit picking good roles.
More info on the whole resort's at Terranea.comAvailable at Black & Blue: 2711 Main St, Santa Monica; 310.664.9400
LA denimsmith Level rummaged through reams of vintage bins to find materials/fit inspiration for its new collection, which includes two just-dropped washes of their slim-fit "Smythe": a straightforward clean look with lighter fabric-stitching on the pockets, and another, heavily distressed number with knee-scuffs. All jeans also get buttons and rivets with the designer's trademark, an Egyptian hieroglyph ankh -- the symbol for fertility, which is the last thing you need on your jeans.
They're all at LevelJeansUSA.comSunday at 23000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu; 310.456.3443; full service starts Monday
This smaller, take-out-encouraged, 6th offspring of the retro-themed Ruby's Diner is celebrating its opening (in a refurbished 40's-era cafe all the way at the pier's end) with an all-day blowout featuring music from a live surf rock band and gratis grub like burgers, fries, and samples of their shakes, which include caramel, peanut butter, and "Banana Cream Dream", which you've mostly grown out of.
The full menu's at Ruby's.comSaturday at the Geffen Contemporary at the Moca: 152 N Central Ave, Downtown
A ticket to this architectural double feature (Dustin Hoffman-narrated, Frank Gehry-featured "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman", and award-winning "The Greening of Southie") also gets you into the pre-screening party: a first-ever corral of usually dispersed truck food gems. Kogi's unconfirmed but likely, while locked-in participants include gourmet dogs from Culver City's Let's Be Frank, baby back ribs and pulled pork sandwiches from the Venice-centric Barbie's Q, and ice cream sandwiches from often-in-Silverlake Cool Haus, each punnily named after an architect, though nowhere to be found is the I. M. Peinutbuttercup.
