The Filling Station

Come on, who didn't have fun pretending to be a car: making bad-ass engine noises with your mouth, running stuff over, having gas. For a resto getting in on the fun, pull into The Filling Station.

Resurrected after a 10-year hiatus on the same block it held things down in the '90s, TFS's a gas-station-themed hole-in-the-wall decked out with stone floors, metal siding, and car nostalgia, and offering an off-beat, cringingly car-punny sandwich and burger menu that's all about filling you up, though your sprightly movements will be all that keeps you from being leaded. They fire off the line with starters like Buffalo or jerk chicken wings that're grilled, not fried, and bacon jalapeno cheese taters, before moving to a collection of (here they come...) "sedanwiches" like the Porschebello (marinated portobellos, spinach, fresh mozz, roasted peppers, grilled onions), the presumably pony-car-referencing Italian Filly (ribeye, mushrooms, marinara, provolone, & Parmesan on a garlic hoagie), and one with provolone, peppered bacon, and tater tots smashed together in garlic bread called Mel's Car, which sounds way more fun than your mom's, which you weren't allowed to even eat in after the Starburst incident. Burger choices range from creative to nutty with creations like the the Malibu Bleu, which is blackened and topped with bleu cheese, the Speed Racer, w/ sautéed spinach, mushrooms, jalapeno jack, bacon, and a fried egg, and the Super Sport, w/ peppered bacon, red onions, and creamy peanut butter, which it obviously got installed at Jif Lube.

Wrapping things up's non-sandwich fare like The Floor Mat (Cajun meatloaf topped w/ sautéed onions, w/ mashed potatoes & gravy), the Filly Chili (chili over white rice w/ cheddar, sour cream and jalapenos), and a fully decked quesadilla called the Flat Tire -- which you should be able to handle, since you've already got the spare.
