Napapijri Clothing (now closed)

Innovations born in the crucible can have wonderful pedestrian uses: missile-tracking GPS now assures you don't get lost driving to Taco Bell, while "lasers" went from incinerating space ships to neatly removing pubes. For casual clothing born of extreme circumstances, check out Napapijri's spring collection, in the Lincoln Rd store now.

Finnish for "Arctic Circle", Napapijri's known in Europe for expedition-inspired ski and adventure gear, and now's whipping out Miami-ready sportswear still loaded with hard-earned details wrought via actual expeditions to places like Mongolia, Lapland, and...Vail. Spring jackets include the army-style driver-length (below the butt) "Bubba", held together with micro-rivets and double-, triple-, and even quadruple-stitched seams; and the "Shelter": kind of a sleek-shelled techno-fabric golf jacket, with Velcro cuffs, mesh liner, and reflective collar tape for when you can't not chase that ball across the street. Other stuff includes the heavy stretch-cotton "Powell" (striped cotton-lined hood, elbow patches, triple-stitched seams) and shirts like the "Ambila" (a long sleeve polo that's not quite a rugby, with piped collar, piped placket, and cut-out/sewn-in Norwegian flag on the back) and the "Dream" polo, with extra-short sleeves, contrasting whip seam-stitching, and big buttons normally used for button-fly jeans, coyly hinting at your 16-inch neck.

Also repped: footwear like the retro "Bonn" (half deck shoe/half squash sneaker), and lace-up swim trunks like the blue, red, or pink "Surfer" with a slightly elastic waist, five cargo pant-like pockets, and a carefully designed Velcro fly -- for easy access to the laser's awesome impact on mankind.
