Food: Yerba Buena
From a former Le Cirque manager and China Grill chef, this intimate bistro's pouring generous measures of Old World wines to accompany Latin fare like Merluza (hake fillet, boniato puree), Ropa Vieja (Cuban shredded flank steak), and the roasted chicken hen/spinach/mushrooms dish "pio pio" -- the succulent flavor of which is in no way compromised by its name sounding like a kid's laser-gun battle.
Toughen up Dad: The XTensor
Developed by an NY-based clinical exercise specialist, this exoskeleton-like hand sheath strengthens finger extensor muscles via inverse resistance, thus allowing pops to compliment his iron grip with a "dismissive backhand of steel".
Grooming: Free Shave and a Haircut
Mention Thrillist when booking and receive a gratis shave & cut at high-end salon Xac Anthony, where clients include everyone from WNYW meteorologist Mike Woods, to Eminem, to actresses in The Vagina Monologues (curiously, the working title of every Marshall Mathers cd).
Xac also does tattoos. Check out the salon's full services at XacAnthony.com
Food: Late-Night Oyster Happy Hour
All summer long, Ed's offering $2 off East Coast oysters (peconic, beau soleil, etc), plus a combo special: a dozen oysters and two glasses of any house champagne for $40 -- making Ed's a great place to pop in with a date who doesn't like oysters or champagne.
For more heaping goodness, try Ed's lobster roll. Check the full dinner menu at LobsterBarNYC.com.
Travel: Best Airport to City Transpo
This obsessively detailed guide compiles the best public transpo options categorized by airport, e.g., best balance of cost/convenience from EWR (Olympia Trails bus), and fastest conveyance from JFK at rush hour (AirTrain + LIRR, unless you snag a helicopter, which takes 8mins, costs ~$100, and leads to euphoric feelings of JanMichaelVincentness).
