In an attempt to justify Ferndale’s “Fashionable” nickname beyond just the Payless, John D stripped down and glitzed up the former Club Bart location to produce a bistro-lounge that feels like a classy bomb went off in a French cabaret thanks to weathered brick and a single booth with a 19th-century velvet headboard.
Shared Plates & Sandwiches: Hit a table or the upstairs lounge-loft (when there's no live music going on) to down calamari in white wine & cream, or a truffles/ fig spread/ foie gras John D PB&J that's topped with an edible flower, which'll taste so good once it hits tulips. All 'wiches are served with parm & truffle oil fries, so be vaguely healthy with the apple- & mango-topped turkey burger, or attack slow-cooked, fall-off-the-very-tiny-bone duck sliders w/ 'shrooms (and no actual tiny bones).
Mains: Burlier plates include scallops on puff pastry pedestals, their signature filet w/ a demi-glace & a mushroom sauce made with Crown Royal (the owner's favorite drink!), and the lump crab/ asparagus/ bearnaise-aided Chicken Oscar... goddammit, will Air Bud never get the acclaim he so rightly deserves?!?
'Tails: Specialty sips include the John D (Jameson, orange, Aperol, agave & bitters) and the Cilantro Julep (cilantro tequila, pineapple, agave & jalapeno), plus they’re stocking suds (seasonal Leinenkugel & Bell's drafts) and a full range of wine they’ll happily re-cork if you want to take the remainder home, because they don't want to force you to Paymore for another bottle.
