Prix Fixe-Free VDay

Valentine's Day's a month out. Nab a table at one of these date-worthy spots and avoid the typical prix fixe gouging that leaves your wallet light, and your date heavy.

Dosa
1700 Fillmore, at Post; Fillmore; 415.441.3672
The swank showcase for Southern Indian chow's already gained renown for its selection of dippable crepes like blended eggplant chutney and habanero mango masala -- a dish destined to inspire a folksy ethnic rom-com bearing the lesson that your grandmother's cooking is the solution to your seemingly modern and complicated love life.

Gitane
6 Claude Lane, at Bush; Union Square; 415.788.6686
The bi-level, gypsy-themed bar-staraunt's rockin' their regular far-flung a la carte, e.g., honey-soy glazed baby back ribs, and goat cheese-stuffed sauteed prunes wrapped in bacon -- a favorite among imprudent geriatrics.

1300
1300 Fillmore St, at Eddy; Fillmore; 415.771.7100
Historical-romantic with b&w photos of jazz greats, the chic, upscale soul food spot serves the likes of roasted Arctic char, bbq shrimp n' creamy grits, and some of SF's best fried chicken. Alternatively, hit Roscoe's and have a 'bate.
Check out the finger lickin' goodness

Jack Falstaff
598 2nd St, at Brannan; SOMA; 415.836.9239
JF's dinner's best taken down in the heated patio, and finished off with sugary ridiculousness like a root beer float with a shot of hazelnut Frangelico, which you can smoothly claim makes your date look "frangelic".
Their menu's always changing; see some samples here

Destino
1815 Market St, near Guerrero; 415.552.4451
The intimate bistro's serving up their usual Peruvian fare, plus a laundry list of Latin cocktails, from the manly-ish Tamarind Sour to the Pisco-politan, grown annoyingly popular ever since the Sexo en la Ciudad craze.

Scala's Bistro
432 Powell St, btwn Post and Sutter; Union Square; 415.395.8555
The vaulted-ceiling Union Square classic's got a brand new (ex-Coco 500) chef and a tuned up Itali-Cali menu with stuff like a rack o' lamb in sunchoke puree and dungeness crab risotto w/ treviso and lobster jus (they jus couldn't leave shell enough alone).
Here's the new menu

Lark Creek Inn
234 Magnolia Ave, at Madrone; Larkspur; 415.924.7766
The quaint Marin hideout offers three prime options for V-Day woo-age: the heat-lamped creek-side garden, the stone-floored sun porch, and the glass-ceiling main dining room, which should set the mood as surely as a mirror-ceiling bedroom will kill it.

South
330 Townsend St, btwn 4th and 5th; SOMA; 415.974.5599
Styled like a Sydney loft (soooo different than a New York loft), the "down-under gourmet" slings healthy grub from pesto/prosciuttio flatbread to black bean chicken confit, and pours from an outback-heavy wine list strangely devoid of Carlo R'Aussie.
Check the menu, mate
