DFC Mexico City

Certain phrases induce debilitating nausea in the resistantly maturing man: "prostate exam", "audit" and, most dreaded of all, "home furnishings". Making the latter not just bearable but awesome, DFC Mexico City.

Helmed by an Aussie art director and a Guatemalan painter, DFC treats traditional Mexican craftsmanship with postmodern wise-crackery to create objects so fetching, your only reason to hit Bed Bath & Beyond will be the giant plastic bears filled with candy. Functional items include ceramic lucha libre "piggy banks", a hand-etched Pyrex wine decanter reminiscent of an 8th grade chem-lab vial (big ups, graduated cylinder), and a dinnerware set inspired by Mexican cowboy comics in which dusty old cowhands stalk bikini-clad pinup girls across barren western landscapes (the good, the bad, and the Baywatch). More decorative goods include near life-size ceramic trophy heads of horses, bulls and deer, and a hand-glazed 10-inch ceramic vase in the form of an anime-eyed cartoon kid whose head's been cropped open to make room for the flowers everyone knows you sent to yourself.

BASE plans to re-up with more from the DFC catalog, which runs from plush alien floor sculptures, to cowboy/pinup wallpaper, to a candelabra where the candle's secured in the wide-open mouth of a ceramic baby head -- disturbing, but not nearly as terrifying as stocking your crib with a "crib".Inset photo by Steven Giles © 2008
