Not since Johnny Utah dove out of a plane after Bodhi in a valiant act of forbidden passion bravery has so much adrenaline been available as at Powell Butte's Brasada Ranch, an 1800-acre high-desert paradise a mere 3hrs from Portland that just unleashed a suite of high-octane sporting to go with its low-octane kickin' it. What you can get into:
Adventure: Their brand-new Adventures program offers insane, guided excursions like climbing Smith Rock, skydiving, white-water rafting on the McKenzie and Deschutes, and heli-biking, in which you get to, then into, da chopper (it quite baller-ly plops down right at the ranch), then fly to a Cascade Volcanic Arc mountain, and get set free to rocket down the crag like a Zoobomber from hell.
(Mild) Excitement: Hate concussions, like a loser? Get down with tennis, hiking, horseback riding, fly fishing, golf (on their 18-hole course), and bird watching expeditions, which hopefully involve checking out flocks of British chicks poolside.
You Crave Not These Things, Just a Back Rub and a Steak: Luxury ranch-style hotel suites and 2- & 3-bedroom cabins offer epic sunset views (especially from private hot tubs), plus there's a spa and a fine-dining resto with meats fired up by big shot chef Adrian Carpenter, so just remember that even though you're not in Utah, whatever you get, you should ask for two.
