The Fat Hen

Seattle
Breakfast Spot
$$$$

Contrary to its name, The Fat Hen is rather small -- dainty, even -- with white wainscoting and marble-topped tables. The daytime eatery is a sunny neighborhood nook, popular for breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch, with only 20 seats available. Under Italian ownership, the Seattle favorite offers a menu featuring the best of Italian and American eats, in addition to French pastries delivered daily from Honoré bakery right across the street. The cafe serves a full breakfast menu of classic morning dishes (mimosas included), but the kitchen's standout mainstay is the "egg bake" -- two eggs baked in a pool of rich house-made tomato basil sauce, served to each guest in an individual cast iron skillet topped with generous portions of ham, mozzarella, pork sausage and mushrooms.

The Fat Hen is Ballard’s tiniest restaurant (it seats maybe a dozen people) and also one of its busiest—like, it’s so popular we wouldn’t even recommend stopping by without a reservation. When you do snag a table, the shakshuka skillet will likely be calling your name, or perhaps its Italian-inspired sibling, the Camicia skillet; otherwise, you could always go for the breakfast sandwich, eggs Benedict, or salmon toast, and be one happy customer.

Cozying up in a corner of The Fat Hen with a big cup of coffee is akin to visiting a friend’s house—the food is made with love, the vibes are just right, and, even when you outstay your welcome, you still hate to leave. Unfortunately, The Fat Hen is takeout only right now—so you can’t really get cozy, at all—but we'd still recommend stopping by for some toast and tea to-go.
How to order: Order online here using the “pickup” button (and keep in mind that they’re closed Monday-Wednesday).
