Maddy's Bar and Grille
Grade school friendships are by nature fleeting, given how tough it is to form lifelong bonds over eating paste and pushing girls off the jungle gym. From a childhood friendship that's endured into booze-peddling adulthood: Maddy's Bar and Grille.
Owned by a couple of guys who've been totes BFF's since the 4th grade, Maddy's is a classically comfy sports pub, armed with a long wooden bar, oversized cushioned leather booths and stools, and walls covered with inset-wine racks, flatscreens, and old-timey baseball photos, harkening back to the days when, with the exception of alcohol, cigarettes, gambling and racism, the game was pure. To make doubly sure you're happy, they're slinging 14+ wines by the glass or bottle, 19 taps (from Magic Hat #9 to Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA), and 13 bottled brews, including Rogue Dead Guy, Spaten Oktoberfest, Kenya's Tusker Lager, and Blue Grass Jefferson Reserve Stout, like country stout, but with more banjo. The menu's a mix of down-home and comfortably exotic, with apps like “Bubba's Southern Basket” (fried green tomatoes, mushrooms, pickles in ranch dressing) and peel & eat shrimp steamed in a spicy court bouillon; sandwiches like a grilled manchego & prosciutto; and entrees like “Mediterranean Spiced Ahi Tuna” (seared medium rare w/ citrus mint sauce) and a 12oz “Coffee Marinated Skirt Steak” that'll have the meat-sweat flowing like you're the Exxon Juan Valdez.
For people not on a diet, they've got an abbreviated late-night menu with tasty bites like the applewood bacon/horseradish “Nota BLT”, slider-ific “Famous Mini Burgers”, and flatbread pizzas including a smoked gouda/chicken/red pepper joint; the late-night runs from 10pm-1am, though at that stumble-home hour, you'd probably be content with a jar of paste.
