Doing everything yourself can be a good or bad idea: cooking instead of going out can be very rewarding, until you're self-treating your flambeed arm with your very own first aid kit. For a restaurant doing their own everything, hit Phoenix Food and Lounge
Now open in Smyrna, Phoenix is a house o' homemade sandwiches, sushi, specialty dinners, and drinks almost totally hand-assembled by a husband/wife team: she handles the cooking, while he's outfitted the joint with his hand-crafted furnishings/interior finishes, including a brush-detailed concrete floor, square black leather ottomans, stone vases w/ tall, painted-red bamboo shooting out of them, and light fixtures with hanging clear & red glass bubbles he hand-blew, which is like second-and-a-half base or something. Lunchtime comestibles start with seared Salmon Tataki w/ Ponzu and Baked Green Mussels topped w/ mayo, masago, & eel sauce, while sandwiches include the Chicken Almond Salad w/ green grapes and the beurre blanc'd Two Grilled Salmon Wraps, who're still beefing with MC Poultry over who's biting who. For dinner, there's Lemongrass Beef w/ Rice Noodles & special Vietnamese sauce, two Jumbo Crab Cakes, and sushi rolls like the Special Crunch (tempura crab cake, mayo, smoked salmon) and the West Village (shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, & eel sauce); they're also pouring nine cold sakes like Momokawa Silver and the milky Sho Chiku Bai, house martinis (Hummingbird: Absolut Pears, Zen green tea liqueur, white cranberry juice), and on-the-rocks house drinks like the Patron Silver/Midori/grapefruit Phoenix Breath, which you just hope doesn't rise from the ashes as you say goodnight to your date
Other sips range from reds (Etude Pinot Noir) and whites (Irony Chard), to bottled domestics like Full Sail Amber and imports like Asahi, Sapporo, & Newcastle. At 10pm this Sat, they'll be hosting their free, first-annual All White Party featuring their sexy lady staff, plus DJ Iron Chef -- let's just hope he's not doing his own lawyering.
