In the movies, people change their identity all the time -- like Julia Roberts in Sleeping with the Enemy, or Eric "Sleeping With" Bieniemy, who now goes by "Dennis Green". Now an Ital eatery's become a Tex-Mex one: South Austin Bar & Grill.
Formerly Vinnie's Italian Resto, SAB&G's halted the spaghetti-slinging in favor of Mexified-78704 food and cocktails, complementing their culinary shift with new wood floors, a dark red paint-job, and a hang-out inviting second bartop (once they 'topped they just couldn't stop). Feasting starts with tacos like pico'd tequila-grilled tilapia and pork chorizo with mushrooms, pickled onions & queso fresca, as well as enchiladas from ancho chile beef, to arugula & mushroom topped with Ranchero, to the consternation of El Camino enthusiasts everywhere. SOT-border takes on comfort food include the Bone-In Pork Chop (grilled & glazed in agave nectar, and accompanied by homemade chorizo & mushroom hash) and Chicken Poblano Mac-N-Queso, as well as between-the-bun options like the black pepper-crusted Chulo Burger (a 1/2lber with fried jalapenos, Jack, chipotle aioli) and the bacon-wrapped, beans/cheese/salsa/pico Sonora Hot Dog, a steady diet of which country purists refer to as "Sonora's Death Row".
To wet your steam-whistle, they're pouring libations like the fresh muddled jalapeno Spicy Grand Marg and the tequila/'peno/basil Bloody Maria -- a potent concoction that at first'll make you Grimace, then later willing to sleep with bieni-one.
