Although it presents some confounding questions as to the nature of sovereign nation-states, there are now two Democratic Republic of Beers, and the new one Downtown 1) is double the size of the original, 2) has 50 rotating brews on tap (Florida Avenue Ale, Swamp Ape IPA, Gonzo Imperial Porter) in addition to their hundreds upon hundreds of bottles, and 3) boasts new eats like sirloin sandos, brats, and beer-soaked mussels.

Rarely does one encounter a dive bar that places such emphasis on skillfully crafted food with elegant presentation. For those who crave a chill ambience (think: repurposed wooden walls, dim lights, and chalkboard drink specials) with gourmet flavors, 180 Degrees at the DRB offers a respite. It’s a gastropub that marries traditional culinary techniques with bar fare, leaving locals raving about their signature 50/50 burger (a house-ground patty of chorizo and beef, topped with queso frito, spicy lime aioli, and a fried egg) not to mention their rotating list of over 50 draft beers.
