There's nothing more soul-stirring than when the best-of-the-best gather to showcase their skills in international competition -- you know, like in Enter the Dragon, and Karate Kid II, and Best of the Best, and, oh yeah, that thing in China. Just returned from international ass-kicking: Bodega, and their "Adidas Consortium AZX Collaboration Project" kicks.
The Boston sneaker heavyweights/Snapple purveyors were one of 26 different Adidas consortium retailers handpicked from all over the world to come to Germany and design their own exclusive, extremely limited-edition ZX kicks. They chose to pimp out the ZX 8000's with a Dream Team of materials: uppers featuring both black ostrich and embossed smooth leather, gray ripstop, terrycloth, red suede toe caps, tan nubuck tongues, neoprene interiors, and a midsole done up in Bone (a.k.a., "John Stockton White"). Celebrating the Beantown streets' old-school Adidas obsession, they've also added hand signs on each tongue/footbed, a pointer finger and a lowercase "B" that flipped upside down references the three trademark stripes; Bodega says the handsign was also used by a Dorcester gang, whose MO was to throw all non-Adidas apparel into the trees (that's right Whitey Bulger -- into the trees, where you can never get them down again).
Bodega will also release very small batches of several of the other boutiques' creations, including Shanghai's ACU (in red suede and yellow), San Fran's Huf (hickory striped) and Paris's Colette, decked out in black, white, and words that start with "C" -- though if they'd really wanted the Best of the Best, it'd be words that start with "Eric Roberts".
