Hangar 1

Hangar 1

Year founded: 2001
Location: Alameda, California
Owner: Proximo Spirits
Widely Available? Yes

Named for its production facility in a former airplane hangar at the Alameda Naval Station, Hangar 1 was launched near San Francisco in 2001 by German distiller Jorg Rupf. Instead of the usual grains or potatoes, Rupf decided to make his vodka like an eau de vie with a blend of both pot-distilled Viognier grapes and column-distilled American wheat. The brand’s flavored vodkas are notably made with unusual ingredients like exotic fruits, such as buddha’s hand and kaffir lime, wasabi and even San Francisco fog.

Trivia: In 2011, Hangar 1 launched a blimp to promote the vodka brand across the U.S. At one point, the 128-foot flying machine broke free of its moorings during a storm in Ohio and ended up in a 94-year-old woman’s backyard.
