Thanks to their self-evident badassery, movies like Gone in 60 Seconds, and the omnipotent aura of Carroll Shelby, vintage GT500s tend to sell at vintage Ferrari prices these days — and this one might be the best of the bunch. Why? Because it was Shelby's personal car/test mule prototype. Basically, this is how the ultimate car guy would soup up a car if he had an entire team of world class engineers at his disposal.

The engine's the 428-cubic inch Police Intercepter "cop motor" found in most GT500s; it's officially rated at 335 horsepower, but that's generally accepted to be a lowball number. Shelby developed an oil cooler to help keep temps down, and this was the first car to get it.
That huge motor had to go somewhere, so the front is where things get really awesome. The nose? Hand-built from fiberglass. The fog lights were actually small spotlights, and the ubiquitous snakes on the side were completely hand-built one-offs.
In back, there's naturally more hand-built work, including the fiberglass tail and the metal gas cap, and it's of course got the classic Shelby taillights.
Inside, the entire car was factory-custom. All that classic wood trim on GT500s? This is where they experimented with what would and wouldn't work — by laying actual wood on top of the original metal dash. Also custom built just for this car are the steering wheel, gearshift, and seat covers.
You can watch Shelby drive this exact car around back in the day since it was used, along with a convertible sibling, in promotional ads that kinda sound like they were made by NFL Films. The cost of it today? Just shy of a cool million.
