These Zodiac Signs Make the Best Bartenders, According to an Astrologer

It takes a certain skill set and temperament to be a bartender. Remembering everyone’s drink order (and making it right), late night shifts, dealing with the very cool guy who won’t stop asking for a drink on the house—frankly, we’re not all cut out for it. Trial by fire is the most common way of finding out if bartending is right for you. But there is another option: looking to the stars.

In general, each of the 12 zodiac signs in sun sign astrology have certain characteristics that may help or hurt their chances of being a good bartender. They’re the same characteristics that help determine which people are more likely to fall in love in a bar or handle their alcohol especially well. To narrow down who should look into a life tending bar, we reached out to Diana Brownstone, a nationally certified astrologer in New York (and frequent speaker at New Life Expo) who has experience in numerous branches of astrology including relationships, birth charts, forecasting and relocation.

First things first, Brownstone says that a general reading isn’t right for everyone. It’s important to see a person’s whole chart to see if there are any mitigating factors that cancel out sections of the broader reading. Readings are based on all the planets together, Brownstone says, and looking at one aspect (just the sun sign) is like looking at a blood test and only reading the blood type. Put simply, one size does not fit all when it comes to sun sign astrology. But a base understanding of a sign’s traits is a good start for those curious enough to consider jumping on the other side of the bar stools. In general, these are the signs that make the best and worst bartenders.

The Best Bartenders, According to Astrological Signs

You’ve likely heard the tired cliche of bartenders being therapists. There’s a reason that cliche became so tired: Bartenders have to be good with people while at the same time being competent at their job. Libras, this is where you shine.

“They’re good at pleasing people,” Brownstone says. “They’re relationship people who immediately establish rapport. They have an easy give and take, and they’re intellectual, so good communicators in general.”

Libras are symbolized by the scale because they’re always looking for balance and to keep the peace—that means less fights between customers and less getting upset at the patron who hasn’t figured out that waving cash doesn’t equal faster service. If you want to get more specific, Libras with a Pisces moon who are empathetic and emotional relationship people make solid bartenders. However, air signs as a whole (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) are generally associated with temperaments apt for bars and service.

The Worst Bartenders, According to Astrological Signs

If there’s one thing you don’t want your bartender to be, it’s a rigid rule follower who doesn’t like to go with the flow. Hello, earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn).

“People want to get their drinks quickly, and Tauruses can be kind of slow moving,” Brownstone says. “Virgo is another earth sign, and they’re really particular. They’re just very specific, critical, nitpicky and exacting—they might want to do everything by the book.”

Another type of person you don’t want behind the bar: Someone who’s prone to be drinking a lot  on the job. Looking at you water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces).

Water signs might be thinking, “Wait, but bars and drinking are our thing.” And that’s generally true. But water signs, especially Pisces, tend to fit better on the other side of the bar. That’s not to say that typical water traits don’t make for good or halfway decent bartenders. Creativity and being in touch with emotions are both water traits that could lead to success behind the bar. Too in touch with emotions and creativity, however, can lead to poor service.
