Unexpected combos sometimes just work, whether it's Sam Jackson and Travolta, hot chicks and machine guns, or one that tumbled into the couch cushions...still crunchy! For a joint filling you with both cupcakes and burgers, hit up First & First Southern Baking Company.
Manned by two bros, F&F doles out homemade southern-style baked goods but also gets serious with lunch and dinner fare raided from the family treasure chest of comfort food recipes, all in a joint styled after a small-town southern bakery, with display cases full of cakes & pies and a vat of lemonade on the counter -- no word yet on proximity to a fudger-er. Things kick off with apps like Southern Caviar (black-eyed peas, corn, jalapenos, and pimentos in a "zesty sauce" with corn chips), sandwiches like the Pig Lover with roasted pulled pork and their family BBQ sauce, Angus meatloaf topped with a heavy tomato sauce, and a broiled Angus burger smothered in a pink sauce called the Fat Boy, which puts you at risk of being a cannibal. The bakery's rocking a roster of pound cakes in flavors like Mandarin orange, mojito, Jack Daniels, and margarita, plus Ray's Bread Pudding (bananas, raisins, rum, Krispy Kreme donuts, dulce de leche), pineapple upside-down cake, and a smokey toasted marshmallow milkshake with vanilla ice cream and a "secret" ingredient (meaning it's strong enough for a man, but PH-balanced for a woman?)
F&F's also making you happy with a slew of beers, various whites and reds, and sangria, and if you're around downtown early they've also got breakfast, including stuff like Papa's Potato Pancakes with onion, cheese, and apple butter; and buttermilk biscuits with scrambled eggs, bacon, and a cup of fresh fruit called the Biscuit Basket -- an unexpected combo that could only be topped by actual Combos.
