Nevermind the Funky Name, the Monkey Gland is a Tasty Gin Cocktail
Trust us, this drink tastes a lot better than its name suggests it will. It’s got gin, fresh OJ, a dash of fresh lemon juice, some grenadine and a bar spoon of absinthe. It’s really good, with some genuine complexity and great balance. But that name: It (somehow) comes from an antiquated French surgical procedure involving actual monkey glands and male virility. (No, really.) Harry McElhone of Paris’s famous Harry’s New York Bar created the Monkey Gland, in the late 1920s.
Here’s how to make it:
- 2 oz gin
- .75 oz fresh orange juice
- .25 oz fresh lemon juice
- .5 oz grenadine
- 1 bar spoon of absinthe
- Add gin, orange juice, lemon juice, grenadine, and absinthe to a shaker tin filled with ice.
- Shake to combine and chill.
- Strain into a chilled Coupe glass.
