This spin on a traditional Old Fashioned was created in 2007 by Phil Ward of famed NYC joint Death & Co—and instantly became a classic itself. Ward swapped out the original's whiskey for reposado tequila and a splash of mezcal, and—listo—he had a delicious Mexican riff on the iconic cocktail.
Don’t forget to flame the orange-peel garnish over the drink before dropping it in. It adds smoky, citrusy aromatics.
Here’s the full recipe:
- 1.5 oz reposado tequila
- .5 oz mezcal
- 1 tsp agave nectar
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- Orange peel, for garnish
- Combine tequila, mezcal, agave, and bitters in a Rocks glass with one large cube.
- Stir to combine and chill.
- Flame the orange peel (squeeze the peel with the orange side facing the match) over the drink and drop it in.
