Whiskey Drinks Everyone Should Know: Old Fashioned

Every year, Drinks International surveys more than a hundred bars around the world and publishes a list of the best-selling cocktails on the planet. And every year since 2015, the mighty Old Fashioned has clocked in at No. 1 on that list. A combination of sugar, water, bitters, and spirits, the Old Fashioned dates to the 19th century, and it canbe (and has been) put together in an almost infinite number of ways. This version hews close to the earliest recipes for the drink, focusing on simplicity and balance.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz rye or bourbon whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 tsp water
  • Orange peel, for garnish

Method

  • Muddle the water, sugar, and bitters in an Old Fashioned glass.
  • Add one oversized ice cube.
  • Pour whiskey over ice cube.
  • Stir with a barspoon.
  • Garnish with orange peel
