There is a role for whisky beyond classic cocktails -- the key is to use flavors that compliment, not overwhelm, the intricate flavors of the scotch. Because it's about damn time Johnnie Walker Double Black® received its mixological due, five of America's best bartenders recently set to work creating vessels suitable for its rich, smoky intensity. Check out the results:

The Double Black Spiced Sour
Anthony Humphreys

1.25 oz. Johnnie Walker Double Black
.67 oz. Crème de Cassis
.67 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
1.25 tsp. Honey Syrup
Blackberry for Garnish
Jalapeño Slice for Garnish
Muddle jalapeño in Boston shaker.
Add Johnnie Walker Double Black, red liqueur, fresh lemon juice and honey syrup and shake vigorously.
Double strain contents into a rocks glass over a 2x2 cube.
Garnish with jalapeño slice and blackberry on a skewer.

Tasting Notes: "The honey, lemon and cassis bring out the sweet and fruit notes of the malt," says Mendenhall, "while the spice of the jalapeno lingers with the smoke on the finish." This is absolutely the sort of globe-spanning cocktail Alexander Walker would have envisioned, if anyone in 19th century Scotland had had any idea what a jalapeno was.

The Full House

1 oz. Johnnie Walker Double Black
.75 tbsp. Sweet Vermouth
.25 oz. Amaro
1 dash Chocolate Bitters
Orange Twist for Garnish
Combine Johnnie Walker Double Black, sweet vermouth, amaro and chocolate bitters into a mixing glass.
Add ice and stir until chilled.
Garnish with orange twist.

Tasting Notes: "If Johnnie Black set the bar, this expression ups the ante with a bit more depth and complexity," says Joly. "I wanted to play on the richer, darker flavors, and for the Scotch to shine through."

2/3 oz. Fresh Pineapple Juice
1/3 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
1/3 oz. Rich Honey Syrup (2 parts Honey: 1 part Water)

Tasting Notes (prepare yourself to be overwhelmed with intrigue and passion): "He sits at the bar alone, gazing casually and confidently across the crowd. Your eyes meet, and a slight mischievous smile crosses briefly across his face. You are refreshed, slightly exhilarated and now wishing to know more about the depth of his mystery. Would you want to spend time with him on a sunny beach or snowed in at a mountain lodge by a fireplace? You're not sure, but either would be appropriate."

Bobby Burns
Anthony Humphreys

1.25 oz. Johnnie Walker Double Black
.5 oz. Sweet Vermouth
Barspoon of Aged Herbal Liqueur
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled coupe.
No garnish

Tasting Notes: While the poet Robert Burns might not approve of you calling him Bobby, he would absolutely be open to bringing Scotland's East and West coasts together in a chilled coupe, thereby reinventing his eponymous cocktail with hints of smoldering charcoal, crisp ash, and burnt timber. He said as much in "Lassie Wi' The Lintwhite Locks". Probably. It's kind of hard to tell.
