Sipping down a chilled brewski or an icy cocktail on the beach is one of the platonic joys of summer. But when that happy hour starts to hurt our feathered friends, that’s when it’s time to put a stop to those surfside parties. In an incredibly sad turn of events, seagulls in the U.K. are apparently getting drunk on peoples’ leftover beach drinks.
According to Devon Live, firefighters were called to Dorset to rescue a seagull who had fallen off a roof and could not fly. According to reports, the seagull smelled like beer and vomited on the firefighters. That bird was not the only victim; three others were also taken to the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) center to sober up.
One working theory is that the birds drank leftover beer from not-quite-empty plastic cups that had been left behind by the previous night’s revelers. But a representative from the RSPCA is not convinced. “Our suspicion is that it is a byproduct of the brewing process, as they all seem to have eaten the same thing,” he told reporters. Another theory is that the birds are getting seemingly inebriated on flying ants.
Whatever the case, even if the birds are just overdoing it on ants, it’s still not a good idea to leave your plastic cups at the beach—full of alcohol or not. Be smart with your beach drinking this summer, guys. The seagulls, crabs, sandpipers, turtles and any other beach creatures will thank you.
