Built on the campus of the old Blessed Sacrament Church in JP, Centre Street Sanctuary's a religiously themed, 80-seat "small plate wine bar meets American grill house" complete with church pews, stained glass, and enough
church wine booze to make you say "Hallelujah". No need to bless yourself and genuflect -- just grab a pew by the door and wait until your table is ready. Or make haste instead to this stately 14-seat bar crafted from wood that's been... wait for it... "Saved" from an old local church. The extensive beer lineup runs the gamut from drafts like Lagunitas Undercover Ale, Fullers ESB, and Smithwicks Irish Red... ... to cans, bottles, and bombers of everything from Full Sail's Bourbon Stout, to Cambridge Brewing's Flower Child, to Left Hand's 400lb Monkey IPA. Because, despite the fact that you were an altar boy, they're not going to serve you a basket of delicious, cardboard-y communion wafers, partake of the menu's "Daily Bread" in the form of tasty kettle chips instead. Or, if you're seeking a more substantial group nosh, CSS rocks a full repertoire of small plates, like shrimp and jalapeno fritters w/ spiced remoulade, curried mussels in coconut milk, and this poutine w/ brown gravy, bacon, and cheese curds. Do you like to nod approvingly at local art while enjoying your repast? Yes? Well, then, your table is ready. The cocktail menu includes libations like the Sanctuary Sangria w/ Fruitlab hibiscus liqueur and peach brandy, a honey tea bourbon & mint Honey Pot Smash, and... ... this handsome Ward 10 Manhattan made w/ Sailor Jerry's rum and chocolate mole bitters. Before diving into one of their burlier "Creations" -- like mustard-encrusted pork loin or a 12oz grass-fed rib-eye w/ black garlic & and mushroom gravy -- feel better about yourself by taking down this Kalamata- and feta-topped Greek salad. Assuming you're still hungry and/or trying to check gluttony off your list of daily sins, finish strong with this plate of Muenster-melted beef sliders topped w/ thick-cut bacon, tomato confit, and lemon-dressed arugula.
