Hurapan Kitchen

It's always preferable to drink too much on a date, but the only cost-effective way to do it's at a BYO -- most of which are too divey even for the sort of woman who'd overlook your drinking. Changing that (for now at least): Hurapan Kitchen. HuKi's headed up by former Rain exec chef Taweewat Hurapan, a two-time Olympic fencer who parlayed his human-slicing career into one of slicing victuals. His menu includes standards, but ups the ante with dishes like Wok Seared Chilean Sea Bass, Lump Crab Crusted Salmon, and a traditional Thai... porterhouse. There are also monster seafood platters (lobsters, shrimp, oysters, clams, scallops) from $55-$111, and Thai Hot Pots -- boiling cauldrons brought to your table, into which you can personally toss meat, fish, or your date's incessantly chirping RAZR. You'll enjoy all this in a convenient West Village location that's stylish enough for any casual date, whether set up through a friend, or "casualwhores.com". HuKi's next liquor board hearing is on the 20th, so they'll stay BYO 'til at least then. But them getting their license won't be the end of your world: they'll be using the occasion to open a tapas-focused downstairs dining room -- so even if you can't afford to drink too much, you can still eat too little...
