As Louisville’s booming restaurant scene, er, booms, the more choices the average diner gets... and therefore also the more ways of screwing everything up. Arming you with the knowledge to avoid this terrible fate, here are the worst restaurant decisions in Louisville.
1. Eating a Hot Brown
You won’t move for days after eating Louisville’s signature heart attack on a plate. But if that’s your thing, by all means, don’t let us stop you!
2. Going to a chain restaurant
With the laundry list of A+ local digs in town why would you even consider going anywhere else?
3. Not having a cocktail & touring the museum at 21c before dinner at Proof on Main
Whether it’s your first date or your 1,000th date, the rotating exhibitions at 21c are ideal conversation starters. The fact that Proof on Main’s cocktails are on point and readily available for your art-heavy stroll is an added bonus to what is always a memorable way to start an evening.
5. Skipping breakfast at Wagner’s Pharmacy before heading to the track
A Louisville tradition, plain and simple. And let’s be honest, the concession food at Churchill Downs isn’t exactly thoroughbred...
6. Sitting inside at El Camino
Sure the indoor dining room at El Camino is colorful and lively but have you seen their patio? It’s amazing!
7. Not taking your dog with you to brunch at Garage Bar
Where do Louisville’s pooches flock to see and be seen? The gravel- and AstroTurf-lined patio at Garage Bar. Those pups most in the know make sure to visit every Sunday for Yappy Hour, when the treats flow freely and there are plenty of cocktail specials for the humans in tow.
8. Not going to Wiltshire on Market for Sunday night jazz
Rolling out a new, hyper-seasonal and hyper-local menu weekly, it’s hard to improve upon the experience Wiltshire on Market offers Louisville diners. Live jazz on Sunday night is simply the cherry on top.
9. Staying upstairs at Mussel & Burger Bar when you could go downstairs to Cena
Did you know there is a world of Italian goodness lying below the surface of one of Louisville’s favorite burger joints? A short elevator ride is all that separates you from spaghetti carbonara, Nonna’s lasagna, and salumi galore!
10. Not ordering a bourbon cocktail with dinner
You’re in Kentucky, come on...
11. Skipping the short road trip to Midway for lunch
A world of culinary riches awaits in this picture-perfect small town just an hour East of the ‘Ville. Holly Hill Inn has long established itself as one of Kentucky’s most revered restaurants and Heirloom offers up a seasonal menu not soon to be forgotten. Add the Grey Goose to the list and you have the makings of a delicious mini-getaway.
12. Eating lunch before you hit up the Flea Off Market
The ‘Ville’s stellar food trucks line up for this favorite monthly event. You’d be foolish not to go on an empty stomach.
