FiveThirtyEight, the premier site for statistic geeks, has been on an exhaustive search for America's greatest burrito since June. After mining Yelp for ratings, assembling a Burrito Selection Committee, choosing a 64-seed bracket, and sending one intrepid journalist across the country to eat them all, the team finally has a victor. Ladies and gentlemen, the best burrito in America is the carnitas burrito at La Taqueria.
San Francisco's beloved Mexican joint pulled the highest final score based on five categories: tortilla, meat, other ingredients, presentation, and flavor profile. And this was one hard-won victory. La Taqueria's final score of 96 out of 100 only narrowly beat out Al & Bea's Mexican Food (94), Taqueria Tlaxcalli (90), and Delicious Mexican Eatery (95) for the crown. But according to FiveThirtyEight's hired burrito gun, people were calling the SF spot to take the tournament from the start. Mexican food expert Gustavo Arellano and celebrity chef David Chang were both early advocates, as well as one popular, insanely good-looking food site. So congratulations are in order for La Taqueria. May the increased lines this press nets you be somewhat manageable.
