The Best Takeout and Delivery Lunch Spots in the East Village

The neighborhood variety you’ve always come to expect.

By now we've memorized every speck on the ceiling, rewatched every show on Netflix, and exhausted every possible way to cook our morning (and afternoon and evening) eggs. Dining out is a distant memory, drinking with friends now happens over webcam, and the concept of a bar crawl is hardly fathomable. But not all is lost.

It's true that the East Village -- loved for its eclectic cuisine and top-notch dive bars -- feels a little different lately, but just because there are fewer drunken 20-somethings roaming the streets at noon doesn't mean the neighborhood's in full shutdown mode.

We've rounded up the best East Village restaurants currently open for takeout and delivery at lunch. These spots highlight cuisine from all over the globe, offering locals the variety they've come to expect: burritos, bowls, and burgers, of course, but pierogies, arepas, and papaya salads, too.

Baar Baar

Call 212-228-1200 or order via Caviar, ChowNow, Grubhub, Postmates, Seamless, Uber Eats
Baar Baar brings Indian cuisine to new heights -- but elevated as it may be, the lunch specials allow you to get a taste without breaking the bank. The contemporary Indian spot reopened for takeout and delivery on May 1, offering lunch from noon to 3pm Tuesday-Sunday. Order regular entrees or complete meal combos, and if you need something sweet, tack on a serving of vermicelli kheer for dessert. And keep an eye out on the site, because Baar Baar plans to add two to-go cocktails to the menu in mid-May.

Bobwhite Counter

Call 212-228-2972 or order via their iOS/Android app, Grubhub, Seamless
Amid the current lockdown, Bobwhite Counter's Avenue C location continues to dish out Southern food starting at noon each day. The most direct way to order and pay is through their custom app, available on iOS/Android devices, where you can rack up points toward free food items. For lunch, your best bet is a fried chicken sandwich, complete with bread and butter pickles and Bobwhite Sauce on a toasted potato bun, plus a free side.

Caracas Arepa Bar

Call 212-228-5062 or order via ChowNow, DoorDash
Take a break from your Mexican/Chinese/Italian food rotation and order up some arepas for lunch, a staple dish throughout Venezuela and Colombia.  Choose from over a dozen varieties of the South American corn cake or -- if you're feeding more than yourself -- order a kit with four ready-to-bake arepas, with fillings of your choice, a side, and a bottle of Caracas' house sauce. Tack on a few Venezuelan pantry items while you're at it and top off the order with wine, beer, hard kombucha, or a michelada. Now that's a proper lunch.

Downtown Bakery

Call 212-254-1757, order online or via Delivery.com, Grubhub, Seamless
Don't let the name fool you -- you won't find any croissants here. Downtown Bakery is a Mexican kitchen with some of the neighborhood's best Latin fare, including tamales, tortas, nachos, enchiladas, and an elaborate menu of breakfast burritos. Breakfast food for lunch?! Mm-hmm. Don't even pretend like there are rules for your work-from-home lunch. There aren't.

Frank

Call 212-420-0202 or order via Caviar, Delivery.com, Grubhub, Seamless, Uber Eats
Get lunch cooking before noon strikes at local Italian restaurant Frank, where homestyle pasta dishes are complemented by a wide selection of starters like liver pâté crostini, caprese salad, and garnished portobello mushroom. Of course, no Italian meal's complete without a little dolce: Indulge in homemade tiramisu or panna cotta with fresh fruit to make your midday break that much sweeter.

Hanoi House & Hanoi Soup Shop

Call 212-995-5010 or order via Caviar, Grubhub, Seamless
You should know by now that Hanoi House and their nearby sister spot Hanoi Soup Shop are pho-king delicious. And you should also know that you can order both to your doorstep with a few quick clicks. Consider the brisket banh mi or the bun cha pork noodles for a filling meal, or a bowl of pho with a side of summer rolls for something lighter. Get a glass of Hanoi egg coffee or lychee tea for an afternoon pick-me-up, or a sake or wine for a 1pm calm-me-down.

Motorino

Call 212-777-2644 or order via Caviar, ChowNow, Grubhub, Seamless
Nobody in the course of history has been let down by a wood-fired pizza, and Motorino won't be responsible for breaking the streak. Their 12" pizzas can spice up any workday, but you also must take advantage of Motorino's lunch special: your choice of any pizza and a mixed green salad with mustard vinaigrette, available weekdays from 11am-4pm.

Ruby’s Cafe

Call 646-998-4265, order online or via Caviar
The Australia-influenced menu of Ruby’s is a go-to, as it’s strong on lunch standbys like pastas, salads, bowls, and burgers. For the classic Ruby's experience, order the Bronte, a beef burger sandwiched between slices of toasted ciabatta with tomato, lettuce, sweet chili sauce, mayo, and Swiss cheese. Ruby's seems to know that people are feeling unsettled right now, because they've added a booze selection to their extensive takeout and delivery menu. Their draught beers, wines, Bloody Marys, and mimosas are sure to help take the edge off.

Somtum Der

Call 212-260-8570 or order via Caviar, DoorDash, Grubhub, Seamless
The NYC outpost of Somtum Der serves the same powerful flavors as its Bangkok flagship, and thankfully, there is no shortage of ways to bring them to your door. Somtum Der prepares Thai food in a style specific to Northeast Thailand, emphasizing chili and herbs, deemphasizing sugar, and incorporating a special fish sauce. Their spicy salads make great lunch food -- like the papaya-based tum Thai and porky larb moo -- and the deep roster of noodle, soup, and deep-fried dishes offers something for everyone. Toss on a side of grilled sticky rice and you've got yourself a solid afternoon meal.

Tompkins Square Bagels

Avenue A: Call 646-351-6520 or order via ChowNow, DoorDash, Grubhub, Seamless
2nd Avenue: Call 917-472-7639 or order via Caviar, ChowNow, DoorDash, Grubhub, Seamless

Whether you're intermittent fasting, enjoy breakfast at all hours of the day, or firmly believe that bagel sandwiches count as lunch food, Tompkins Square Bagels' two locations are staying open late enough to help you meet your afternoon carb quota. Get a bagel with any of the standard fixings or splurge on a (more filling) sandwich -- there's one for just about every type of meat, plus a few meatless options. You can't go wrong ordering from one of the best bagel places in the best bagel city.

Veselka
Veselka | Cole Saladino/Thrillist

Veselka

Call 212-228-9682 or order via Caviar, Delivery.com, Grubhub, Seamless
If you live near the East Village, Veselka needs no introduction. It's one of the city's best restaurants, famous for its late-night crowds, and after it reopened for takeout and delivery on May 1, it’s easy to remember why it's just as great of a lunch spot, too. Order a plate of pierogies and some latkes for the classic Veselka experience, or choose from a menu of blintzes, sandwiches, and meaty Ukrainian specialties. There's no such thing as a bad order here.

Westville

Call 212-677-2033, order online or via Caviar, Grubhub, Seamless, Uber Eats
For this local chain, there's no denying that the way they do vegetables is some of the best in the area. Vegetarians and veggie-forward folks can fill up on roasted seasonal veg and cleverly prepared greens with the market plate (options change daily). There's also a large selection of salads, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and grilled meats to appease every appetite. Cap it off with a hard seltzer, beer, or wine and gluten-free molten lava cake and you'll be set until dinner.
