Fried chicken, fried steak, and (non-fried) whiskey
You love fried chicken, you love whiskey, you love fried steak, and that's why you're about to love The Derby, a new spot by way of the team who previously operated the space as Tiny Fork (goodbye, lobster grilled cheese; frown-face emoji).
They've switched things up, giving the spot a new, Southern feel to it with yellow stools and wooden benches, wide-open windows and doors, a distressed mirror that's decorated with a horse & the slogan "Biscuits and Bourbon", and, of course, lots of fried things.
Like this chicken fried steak -- an 8oz, hand-cut rib eye, to be exact -- that's also covered in white gravy made from steak drippings, as well as roasted wild mushrooms.
At dinner, you can grab fried chicken (which is different than chicken-fried), or come by for brunch for the fried chicken and waffles. It's done up Benedict-style, but there's no BS ham or muffins here, just thick cuts of boneless fried chicken and buttermilk waffles.
It's not fried, but this patty melt is still a must-get. It's served on thick-cut brioche that's coated on both sides with homemade Pimento cheese and topped with the standard vegetables and tomato. If only it were somehow also on a waffle...
You are certainly going to need some whiskey to wash all that Southern-fried goodness down, and they'll oblige you with an ever-growing list, as well as a couple juleps. Feel free to skip the non-whiskey options all together.
