Popular trends can take a while to catch on in San Diego, like the heated NorCal/SoCal rivalry, which just captured our imaginations last...oh wait, we still don't care. Now, crazy popular NorCal baked-goods are finally penetrating SD's gullet, at Specialty's Cafe & Bakery.
The husband & wife duo behind SC&B have opened their 31st, and southernmost, location in La Jolla Village, with a huge, tree-shaded patio and a hard-wooded interior featuring local landmark photography, a kingly leather-recliner'd lounge, and a massive kitchen where everything's made from scratch daily, from croutons to croissants -- the consummate French pastry, in that it's all about folding. From sesame sourdough to thyme focaccia, the bread's all soft-crusted "Midwest style", and sandwiches both classic breakfast combos (Denver egg & cheese, etc) and lunchier items like the hot BBQ Chicken (w/ Sweet Baby Ray's and spicy cole slaw) and the oven-roasted-turkey, bacon, crumbled bleu, & avo on potato-poppy-seed "Cobb" -- finish one, then slide cleats-first into your second. For the sweet of tooth, there are cinnamon rolls & sticky buns, plus scads of cookies (peanut butter to oatmeal/wheat germ/bran/chocolate chip) so popular they have an online hot-out-the-oven alert system called "Cookie Radar" (sadly, no planform-aligned Stealth Cookies, as Low Frequency Cookie Radars are just too bulky).
If you fear human contact, they've got self-service kiosks; you can also order, customize, and pay online, then pop in and grab your bag in 15 minutes or less, saving you plenty of time to come up with new taunts for NorC...oh, look, that panda's having a baby.
