LA's got superlative Sushi, and our Mexican food impresses even Mexicans, but our pizza is source of shame on par with rolling blackouts, and Danny Bonaduce. To be proud again, head over to Pizza Buona.
A cozy, wood-paneled joint in a "colorful" section of Echo Park, Buona's yielding-yet-crisp crust strikes the elusive balance between undercooked Mulberry Street floppiness and singed-Saltine-with-cheese brittleness. Made in-house using a top-secret recipe and fresh ingredients, even the pies' sauce bucks trends: rich with no runniness, it's poised on the razor's edge between sweet and tart, just like that hot naïf getting off the bus in the "Welcome to the Jungle" video. Beyond pepperoni/sausage standbys, there are specialty toppings like a sauceless "Rustica" w/ Shrimp and an Eggplant/Marinated Tomato -- heaped with enough garlic that you can forget about post-pie kisses, whether your old lady's undead or not.
As you'd expect, Buona also serves other fare (sandwiches, salads, etc) -- but if you're actually capable of getting sick of pizza, you can forget about Mexican and sushi, and perhaps eating all together.
