Say goodbye to Frosé, boozy popsicles and Piña Coladas by the beach—it’s officially the first day of fall. But don’t cry for the summer drinks you’re losing; smile for the fall ingredients that are about to takeover: apple cider, maple syrup and, above all, pumpkin-flavored everything. Celebrate the arrival of autumn this Friday night with one of our favorite pumpkin cocktails, the Pumpkin Mezcal Margarita.
Created by Johnny Swet, owner of JIMMY at the James in New York, this pumpkin cocktail was inspired by the gourd’s Mexican origins. South of the border, pumpkin is frequently eaten as a savory part of a meal, often roasted and served with mole. This cocktail uses smoky mezcal to replicate that charred flavor, while pumpkin butter and cinnamon evoke mole’s subtle sweetness—and tie it back to America’s obsession with pumpkin spice. A squeeze of lime and a salt rim brighten things up, making it perfect for crushing all Friday night long.
If you can’t get enough boozy pumpkin in your life, check out our other pumpkin-tails, from a pumpkin pie-infused Martini, to a pumpkin ale-spiked fizz, to the ubiquitous queen of fall: the Pumpkin Spice Latté (spiked with bourbon, of course). You could even get started on turning a whole pumpkin into a keg. But for tonight, ease yourself out of summer and into fall’s warm embrace with this vibrant spiced Marg.
