With the 2016 Oscars behind us, it's time to shift focus to the cultural honors that really matter: the MTV Movie Awards! And this one has fun categories, like "Best Hero," "Best Virtual Performance," "Best Kiss," and "True Story," for those ho-hum movies about real people who had real accomplishments and earned real notoriety from them -- but none of those could win in a fight against the nominees for "Best Fight," let's be honest.
This year's nominees should look familiar by now: The Revenant, The Big Short, Steve Jobs, Ex Machina, The Martian, and Room all piggybacked Oscar nods to earn spots on MTV's competitive lists. And because it can, MTV squeezed last year's blockbuster heavy-hitters into the mix, too. For the people! Up for "Movie of the Year" are Avengers: Age of Ultron, Creed, Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Straight Outta Compton, and... Deadpool. Deadpool? Wait, that came out this year!
Them's the rules, kids. Thanks to sneaky release-date rules, 2016's R-rated, just-OK superhero smash qualifies for this year's ceremony. On top of the night's big prize, Deadpool also snagged nominations for Morena Baccarin ("Best Female Performance"), Ed Skrein ("Best Villain"), and Ryan Reynolds, who pulled a triple play with "Best Action Performance," "Best Comedic Performance," and "Best Male Performance." His competition for the latter: Leonardo DiCaprio, who just won his first Oscar for The Revenant. What a world.
