Charlize Theron Is an Ageless Warrior in the Trailer for Netflix's 'The Old Guard'
And she kicks much ass.
Charlize Theron is one of the finest ass-kickers in cinema. From her furious Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road to her sleek spy in Atomic Blonde, it is always a pleasure to watch her lay someone out on screen. So it's with giddy excitement that we watched the new trailer for The Old Guard, an upcoming Netflix sci-fi thriller in which the actress plays an ancient, ageless warrior who throws down quite a bit.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball) and based on an Image Comics series (read issue #1 here), The Old Guard finds Theron playing Andy, a.k.a. Andromache, as in the mythological Greek figure, who has lived for centuries as a covert operative along with a crew of fellow immortals from various periods in history. "This is an elite, small army of people with a great set of abilities," Theron said in an interview with Vanity Fair. "They don’t die easily."
When the movie picks up, she's recruiting and training a young soldier played by KiKi Layne from If Beale Street Could Talk. But even as Andy enlists a new generation, she's battling both irrelevancy and nefarious forces led by Chiwetel Ejiofor that want to imprison her kind and weaponize them.
This all sounds like great fun. But will it join our ranking of the best Netflix movies of 2020 when the movie arrives on July 10? We'll see!
