Boca was a pretty cool place to be back in the '40s, though it's considerably less so now, considering most of the people living there could tell you that from first-hand experience. Get the flavor of mid-century Boca without having to visit your grandparents, at the Palms.
Brought to you by a collection of artiste & party orgs (3rd Ward, TheDanger...) plus the dudes behind Dumpster Pools, The Palms is injecting the NY party scene with a touch of 1940's Boca, outfitting its former bank digs with a bar in the lobby, a boutique in the vault, and an AstroTurf lounge & wooden deck in the parking lot, which now also boasts three pools, though feel free to start your own for who's going to nail the best can opener. Expect the party to be kept alive by live bands & DJs, with this coming weekend including sets from West African outfits Dry Eye Crew and Just A Band, plus ones-and-twos-ers DJ Moma, The Gorges Boys, and DJ Gravy, the premier act on Jive Turkey Records. Non-melodic "Pool Party Madness", meanwhile, will involve games of strip bocce (seriously), bubble gun battles, a vintage onesie bathing suit fashion show, and the Self Portrait Project, which aims to capture the NYC zeitgeist via a "glorified photo booth" with a two-way mirror, not to be confused with a three-way mirror, which just makes things all awkward the next time you see yourself in it.
To satisfy your most basic urges, there'll be brews from Porkslap to PBR, bottles of Champ, sangria, and rotating eats called in from the likes of Luke's Lobster, Mexicue, and Asiadog, which anyone who's currently living in Boca and's surprisingly computer literate is likely taking way too literally right now.
