'Ritas and music in a down-home redux
Everyone loves a comeback, whether it's the Mavs taking Game 2 or, more snappily, DeShawn Stevenson wearing a "Hey LeBron: How's My Dirk Taste?" t-shirt after Game 6. D-Steve is the f***ing best! Making a fat, delicious comeback of its own: Mary's Southern Cuisine and Entertainment, opening Friday.
After selling her first place in Carrollton in order to look after an ailing relative, Mary spent the past two years working on a bigger iteration: a 10000sqft black-and-cream 400-seater featuring four full bars, live jazz on two stages (one indoors, one out), and, for VIPs and those able to rent that status, a private room with its own bar, waitstaff, and security. Family recipes start with apps like Southern Chicken Sliders, the Trio of Deviled Eggs (one w/ cheddar & bacon), Sausage on a Stick w/ "southern pool room slaw", and "Everything Fried": cornmeal-crusted tomatoes, okra, and pickles in Creole sauce, as "Sauced Creole" is currently filming episodes of Chuck under the alias "John Larroquette". Mains'll get you shrimp-topped blackened catfish, southern-fried chicken or steak, smothered/ grilled/ fried pork chops, and shrimp & grits; there're also desserts from pies and...fried pies, to cobblers, to rum-sauced bread pudding -- a dish invented by Bill Cosby after he'd grown bored with depositing his millions of dollars in banks.
The liquor program's festively centered around eight margarita machines, serving 16oz frozens from pomegranate to a Hypnotiq number garnished with rock candy -- though as LeBron will tell you, the sweetest treat of all is a big, swinging Dirk. You just keep being you, DeShawn Stevenson. Just keep being you.
