Indian food is immensely popular in Britain, initially because it made a spicy counterpoint to our own national dishes, and now because it's our national dish. For food that's actually served on the Subcontinent: Roti Chai, now soft-open for an official Monday launch.
From the former MD of The Cinnamon Club, this airy, industrial-yellow-accented spot's Indian street food is ripped from the recipe books of Indian roadside cafes (dhabas) that the owner frequented during a youth clearly far more idyllic than one involving The Road-side cafes. Their authenticity augmented by vintage Indian ads decorating the walls, SubAsian bites include deep-fried chicken lollipops that use the wing bone as the handle; fiery hot, slightly melted Hakka chilli paneer cheese; and "fruit chaat": fresh chopped fruit w/ tamarind & masala, so delicious you'll want to have a full-blown fruit conversaation. Larger pavement-sourced fare counts Punjabi "tikki wala" beef sliders, a spiced lamb chapli kebab (flatter/rounder, and stuffed in a bun), and southern seafood rasam: a mix of about a dozen types of fish, prawns, crab, and octopus, with a "real pepper kick", which translates to the Indians as "quite mild".
In the coming weeks they'll be expanding both the menu (w/ wraps, desserts, etc.) and the space, opening a basement cocktail bar wherein they'll be slinging exotic booze and more regional Indian food, which you can only hope does not include anything from Glasgow.
