Serving up fast-casual island fare on Pearl, La Jolla's new, bamboo-trimmed, roll-up-front Ohana Cafe takes its name from the Hawaiian term for extended family, which, shockingly, doesn't mean you should just avoid it.
AM Grinds: Island-style morning starters (available Sat & Sun only, for now) range from a simple grilled SPAM & cheese on Hawaiian sweet bread, to the protein-packed La Jolla Scramble with Kalua pork/ zucchini/ onions/ shrooms & cheese. And if your hunger games are so intense, you could eat the equivalent of three plot-driven tween novels, they'll take the La Jolla and add Portuguese sausage, rice, and “heaps of SPAM” to make The Big Kahuna.
PM Grinds: Afternoon noshers will include plates of all the classics (kalbi, Kalua Pork, Poke, etc), teriyaki cheeseburger sliders on, you guessed it, Hawaiian sweet rolls, a Hawaiian-style ceviche called Lomi Lomi Salmon, and a ramen noodle/cabbage salad called “Sumi”, likely because ordering it in front of your buddies will force you to defend yourself.
They're also be shaving traditional Hawaiian-ice just like you used to eat on those family vacations you just can't seem to find the time for anymore, despite the fact that your grandparents aren't going to be around forever, and your cousin is no longer exclusively dating girls who work at the Wet Seal in Horton Plaza...
