Proving once and for all that accepting stuff from strangers in a van is actually a great idea, Vive la Tarte's a just-soft-launched mobile food enterprise started by two Belgians (one with a grandma whose family recipes became a bestselling cookbook) that uses a bright orange 1980 VW van to deliver you sweet 'n savory pies on Mondays & Fridays, and takes orders entirely via Twitter.
Savory options count five eggs-and-pork-packed quiches: classic Lorraine (bacon, mild Swiss), Spinach & Goat Cheese, Broccoli, Fennel & Bacon (uses applewood-smoked chunks), bechamel-sauced Endives & Smoked Ham, and Spinach & Blue Cheese, also what Prop Joe said when Method Man was like, "Heyo Joe, what's your favorite color?". Sweet alternatives include eight sugar-rich tarts, ranging from traditional pies like the Strawberry or Caramelized Hazelnut (both filled with vanilla pastry cream), to less-classic numbers like Rhubarb Crumble, Creme Brulee (a pie-sized creme brulee?!?), Chocolate Gateau (dark Belgian choco w/ French meringue), and the San Francisco Cheesecake, which is
impossible to get a reservation at!! served on a biscuit-y crust made with cinnamon and ginger.
And in case you live in a hard-to-reach-by-van locale, you can skip the delivery and head straight over to their stall at the Upper Haight farmers' market on Wednesday afternoons, which's perfect, 'cause those guys with all the candy in the curtained van said they'd totally give you a ride over there.
