Nothing good usually comes from a fire, unless it's Chicago Fire striker Calen Carr -- that dude scored a game winner in his first game back! For something good that came from a fire (not a mediocre American soccer league), check out The Federal Bar.
Opening Fri in the massive space previously occupied by the club The Bank Heist before it burned up in a blaze of...fire, TFB rises from the ashes like a glossy, two story gastropub/phoenix; the ground floor's a full-service resto preserving the vintage feel of the '30s-era building via exposed bricks, antique lamps, and monstrous trusses (the upper floor's a rentable party space, for now), all from the guys behind the Knitting Factory, whose name often got needled. Grub's from a former Belmont/Counter guy, and includes a flatbread w/ Boursin, pears, baby arugula, balsamic reduction, & spiced pecans; lamb meatloaf w/ Moroccan tomato jam, mashed potatoes, & grilled zucchini, and the short rib/ truffle/ cheese/ potato "Dirty Tots", also what MTV's planning on calling the elementary school version of Skins. Drinks-wise, they've got a full bar with specialty cocktail-ness, as well as 20 craft brews like Victoria Prima Pils, the Telegraph White Ale, and 60min IPA from Dogfish Head, which is almost as hot as Catdolphin 69ing.
They're blowing it out with an opening party on Thurs, and hooking up five Thrillist readers with entrance to the festivities -- though if people start talking about the roof, the roof, the roof being on fire, don't follow their advice -- RUN!!!
