This Bike Lock Has A Built-In Breathalyzer

If we were to rank activities we strongly suggest you not engage in, operating ANY type of vehicle while intoxicated would be up near the very top of the list.

Unfortunately, people will still drive/ride after knocking back a few, no matter how dangerous it is. And apparently, bike riding under the influence is a big enough issue in Japan that a specialized bike lock, the ALCOHO-LOCK, is about to hit the market, with the goal of preventing people from riding while under the influence.

The lock employs a breathalyzer, similar to the ignition interlock devices used by people on probation for DUI. In this case, however, the makers have thrown in an extra safety measure: the lock's Google Play app contacts a predetermined person anytime alcohol is detected by the breathalyzer and gives them the option to call you and unlock the device. That's right—anytime you gear up to ride while intoxicated, you have to hear what your partner, spouse, or mother has to say about it. Chances are, that won't be good.

For now, the ALCOHO-LOCK is only available for preorder in Japan for about $250. Until it gets to the States, and even if/when it does, be smart people. Don't ride under the influence...especially if you don't want an earful from mom.
